Lady Mavs have been hit by the injury bug

Injuries and illness have plagued the Anderson County High School girls basketball throughout the 2022-23 season, and that has been the case in the Lady Mavericks’ last two games.

ACHS (7-15 overall, 1-4 in District 4-AA) had its two top scorers see little or no action Monday night in a 59-23 loss to Northview Academy on the road as Lydia Meldrum and Emily Mustard were limited due to health concerns.

The Lady Mavericks struggled early this week.

“They came out in the first quarter and shot the ball really well and we didn’t shoot it well,” ACHS Coach Mitch Cupples said. “We didn’t have two starters and that’s 22 points per game that we were missing.”

Throughout much of the season, the Lady Mavericks haven’t been able to stay healthy. But Cupples said he’s hoping to have his full complement of players back when ACHS hosts Halls Friday night in the final for both schools.

“We should have everybody back and we really need a district win,” Cupples said. “And it would be nice to get it against the team with the best record in our league right now.

“They’ve lost a few games lately but usually, a team that starts out fast has trouble sustaining it late. Judging from our performance lately, I don’t think they’ll be too motivated for us.”

Monday night’s loss followed a 49-18 setback to Scott Friday night.

The Lady Mavs opened last week with a victory at Oliver Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 17, as they prevailed 54-34 to capture a regular-season sweep against the Lady Bobcats.

Meldrum scored 17 points and freshman Macy Basford added 12.
