Stop thinking about things tomorrow
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
– Matthew 6:34
Dear reader, I hope this column finds you well, that the holiday season we have left behind saw you happy, and that the coming year brings many blessings and praises for you.
Though, as we look ahead to this new year I find myself reminded of one of humanity’s greatest struggles in this life: thought.
Of course, the ability to reason, think, and apply intelligence is a gift God has given us that we all greatly benefit from every day. Though, how often do we find our thoughts leading us astray?
The ancient Roman philosopher Seneca is credited as saying, “We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” I, for one, find his words to be very true.
I would wager that most of us are lucky to spend even 50% of our day actually living in the said day.
So often, we allow our thoughts to roam, and we begin worrying about what we have to do tomorrow, or how stressful work will be next week, or the doctor’s appointment we have next month.
So rarely do we allow ourselves to just live today, because we are so preoccupied with thoughts of tomorrow.
So little of our suffering actually exists. The largest majority of our pain, heartache, anxiety, and troubles exists only in our imagination about what’s going to happen later.
I believe this is why Christ encourages us so strongly to stop thinking about tomorrow and just enjoy the day we have been given.
With this in mind, I would leave you with further words of advice and encouragement from Scripture.
The words of Philippians Chapter 4, Verse 8:
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things.”
