After winning seven in a row, Mavs have now dropped five

It was another tough week for the Anderson County High School boys basketball team. The Mavericks dropped a pair of contests last week and saw their losing streak reach five games.

ACHS (11-13) lost two heartbreakers, falling at Lenoir City 54-51 Friday night and coming up on the short end of a 61-59 decision at home against Gibbs on Tuesday, Jan. 31, when the Eagles’ Zack Turner hit a game-winning layup in the waning moments of the game.

Turner broke a 59-59 tie as he split two Anderson County defenders to make the shot with approximately 10 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

The struggles continued Friday against the Panthers and losing close games is getting old --- no doubt about it.

“When you go from winning seven in a row to losing five in a row, it’s tough and you’ve got to find a way to break it. We had a chance to win both of those games or tie,” Anderson County coach Jordan Jeffers said. “But I didn’t do a good enough job telling them things and we didn’t do a good job executing.

“We’re close but we’re just not good enough right now.”

Brandon Dake paced the Mavericks against the Eagles as he scored 17 points.

Dake and Hayden Craig shared team-high scoring honors against the Panthers as they scored 11 points each in Lenoir City.

ACHS played host to Powell Tuesday but results were not available at press time.

The Mavericks host Knoxville Central Thursday and travel to Seymour Friday before closing out the regular season at home against Maryville Christian Monday.
