Lady Mavs have three in double digits
The 2022-23 regular season has been filled with adversity, including illness and injuries, for the Anderson County High School girls basketball team.
But the Lady Mavericks captured a win as they notched a 58-44 victory over Maryville Christian School at home Monday night.
It was Anderson County’s second win of the season over the Lady Eagles (18-13). The Lady Mavs won the earlier meeting of the campaign, 57-49, in Maryville on Dec. 30.
Monday’s win snapped a four-game losing streak for ACHS (9-19) and couldn’t have come at a better time, as it provides the Lady Mavericks with a bit of momentum as they prepare for the upcoming District 4-AAA Tournament.
“Any win is a good win, especially one heading into the district tournament,” Anderson County Coach Mitch Cupples said. “It was a good time to get one.”
The offense clicked as the Lady Mavs had three players post double figures in the scoring column and two more chipped in with nine points each against the Lady Eagles.
Emily Mustard and Jaylynn Bullock shared high-scoring honors for the team with 12 points each. Shelby Kelly added 11, while Macy Basford and Lydia Meldrum finished with nine points each.
Meldrum, Anderson County’s lone senior on this year’s roster, was honored after the game in Senior Night ceremonies.
“We shot the ball well tonight,” Cupples said. “We made nine 3-pointers in the first half and had 10 for the game.”
Next up for the Lady Mavericks is the district tournament, which will be hosted by Clinton High School.
ACHS, the No. 3 seed, will open postseason play Thursday as it tangles with the No. 2 seeded and host Lady Dragons.
Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.
Clinton swept the regular-season series, winning at home, 53-50, in the district opener for both schools on Dec. 1. The Lady Dragons notched a 67-56 win at Anderson County on Jan. 13.
“It should be a good game,” Cupples said. “It should be fun.”
