Affordable Health Care is topic of Democratic Women’s Club meeting Feb. 27

JUDY ROITMAN
Affordable health care will be the topic of a meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, hosted by the Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club.

The club will host a soup dinner at the Clinton Community Center, 101 S. Hicks St.

Judy Roitman, executive director of the Tennessee Health Care Campaign, will be the guest speaker.

Focusing on the need for Medicaid expansion, she will speak on “Affordable Health Care for Tennessee: Policy Solutions to Cover the Uninsured, Protect Tennessee Hospitals and Reduce Medical Debt.”

Roitman recently was part of a panel at a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge and other organizations, speaking on the need for Medicaid expansion in Tennessee.

The state legislature has rejected more than $1 billion in federal funds for Medicaid expansion, leaving more than 300,000 low-income residents without health insurance and leading to the closing of several rural hospitals.

The nonprofit THCC advocates for policies and programs that improve the health and well-being of Tennesseans, among them that Tennesseans deserve access to affordable, high-quality, and equitable health care.

Roitman’s career has included nonprofit management and health-care advocacy. She first came to Tennessee to organize health-care workers with the Service Employees International Union.

Since then, she has worked to improve women’s health, erase HIV stigma, increase vaccination rates, promote organ donation, and connect people to the resources and insurance they need.

The Democratic Women’s Club board will provide soups and bread for the meeting.

Cost is $10 per person.
