Northview Academy puts an end to Lady Mavs’ season
The Lady Mavericks were eliminated in the first round of the Region 2-AAA Tournament as they dropped a 58-19 decision to Northview Academy in Kodak.
ACHS (10-21) had been plagued with adversity, including injuries and illness all season. And Friday night was no different. Senior Lydia Meldrum hurt her ankle in Thursday’s practice. She attempted to play against the Lady Cougars, but couldn’t finish the game.
Still the game was competitive early as it was locked in a 10-10 tie with two minutes remaining in the first quarter before the Lady Cougars knocked down a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the frame to make it 16-10.
“The final score was a little deceiving,” Lady Mavs’ coach Mitch Cupples said. “It was 10-10 at one point before they hit two 3-pointers at the end of the quarter and it was 23-15 at halftime.
“We only scored four points in the second half and they outscored us 20-2 in the third quarter and the fourth quarter, we both played with our subs and the clock was running, so it all went pretty quick.
Jaylynn Bullock led ACHS with seven points and Macy Basford added five.
Cupples noted that despite a tough finish, the Lady Mavericks’ 2022-23 campaign had some bright moments.
“We had some good games and we had some good wins,” he said. “Even in some games we lost, we played well. We had injuries and illness all year.
“I’m not an excuse maker and I don’t want the girls to make excuses, but it is what it is. After the game, we talked a lot about adversity and how you bounce back from it.”
