Four days, six games, and big win to top it off for Clinton

It was a weekend of mixed results for the Clinton High School baseball team at the Clinch River Challenge.

But the Dragons closed out tournament play with a 4-2 victory over Bryan Station (Kentucky) Sunday afternoon.

“It was nice to play against Bryan Station,” Coach Rob Stacy said. “They’re a really good team and their coach used to coach at Georgetown College and he coached against me.”

For the Dragons, who played six games in four days, Cam Britton and Harrison Shelton drove in runs, while Dallas Beats and Isaiah Slaven had the only two hits of the contest for CHS (9-6).

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the fourth before Bryan Station knotted the contest with a pair of runs in the fifth. Clinton took the lead for good by scoring a pair in the bottom of the frame.

On Saturday morning, the Dragons edged East Ridge (Kentucky), 6-5, as Shelton went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and a stolen base. Britton was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Later Saturday, the Dragons added a game against Walker Valley after a scheduling problem.

Clinton had a depleted pitching staff, but Stacy took the game so the Mustangs wouldn’t be shorted.

“I told them that we didn’t have any pitching ready for them, but we’ll take the game so you can get some work in,” Stacy said.

The Mustangs prevailed 13-1 but Stacy had no regrets about adding Walker Valley to his squad’s schedule.

“We played like six games in seven days and I did that on purpose to get us ready for a district or region tournament situation or a sectional situation,” Stacy said. “I’m really glad we played (the Mustangs) because they’re a really good (Class) 4A team.”

On Friday, the Dragons played a pair, dropping games to Carter (7-1) and Lakeway Christian School (2-0).

“We didn’t play well against Carter and I was disappointed about that,” Stacy said. “But then, we came back and played well against Lakeway.”

Clinton opened the tournament with a 17-3 win over former District 3-AAA rival Campbell County Thursday night.

“We came out and did what we were supposed to do against Campbell County. By that, I mean that we came out and hit the ball like we planned to,” Stacy said.

Britton went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. Sam Raley was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and a stolen base. Nik Kidd had two hits (including a double) and drove in a pair.

Slaven and Shelton each had a hit and drove in two runs. Shelton scored three times while Slaven crossed the plate twice.

After a brief break, the Dragons will return to the diamond Thursday night at home against Karns in the ETBCA Tournament.

First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
