Young Lady Mavs making strides

Anderson County has one of the youngest high school softball teams in the area, but the Lady Mavericks, who are continuing to improve on the diamond, notched three big wins last week.

They closed the week with an 8-7 comeback win over Oliver Springs Friday night.

In that game, Reece Miller went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Makayla Simmons was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.

Kaylin McKamey was 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI in a wild contest against the previously undefeated Lady Bobcats.

“That was a big win for us,” Anderson County Coach Allen Russell said. “They were undefeated coming in here.

“They’re a good team and they had already beaten Clinton this year.”

On Tuesday, March 28, the Lady Mavericks (6-5-1 overall, 1-1 in District 4-AAA) picked up their first league win of the 2023 campaign when they routed Scott 14-1 in four innings in Huntsville.

ACHS, which took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, broke things open by scoring nine times in the second inning. The Lady Mavs scored three more runs in the third.

Anderson County would finish the contest with 14 hits, including five that went for extra bases. Kaycee Baldwin, Reece Miller, Kaylin McKamey and Alli McKamey all doubled for the Lady Mavericks, while Simmons came up with a triple.

Alli McKamey and McKenna Miller each chipped in with three hits for ACHS. Simmons and Reece Miller each had two hits, and Lily Summer went 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Simmons had four RBIs while Reece Miller and McKenna Miller came up with three each and Kaylin McKamey drove in two runs.

“Our girls did a good job staying back (against the Lady Highlanders). They did a good job doing what they were supposed to do,” Russell said. “Scott is struggling but they’re doing a good job and they’ve got 20 girls, a lot more girls than we have.”

Of those 20 players, seven have never played before this season but a league win is a league win.

“It’s always good to get a win in the district and that was our first district win,” Russell said.

The Lady Mavs opened the week with a 6-5 victory over Oak Ridge on Monday, March 27.

“It was good to get that win because Oak Ridge is a county rival and this is probably the best team they’ve ever had,” Russell said.

ACHS wins rematch against Bobcats Monday: A two-run seventh inning helped the Lady Mavericks break a 9-9 tie and sealed an 11-9 victory at Oliver Springs Monday night.

Alexis Siebers went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Simmons was 1-for-2 with a double and three runs.

Alli McKamey doubled, scored and drove in three runs against Oliver Springs.
