Slow start on the pitch hurts CHS soccer

A slow start proved problematic for the Clinton High School boys soccer team in a loss Friday night.

“It was just one of those days,” Dragons second-year Head Coach Gene Chunn said after his side came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision to Maryville Christian School.

“We started off slow after we were coming off a big win on Sunday (March 26 at the Smoky Mountain Cup),” he said. “It’s just a process and we have a young team. In the second half, we played well.”

Clinton’s lone goal of the match came from Rubino Rivera in the first half.

With the loss, the Dragons fell to 2-3 for the season.

Three different players scored for the Eagles in a match that was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Parker Floyd, Nathan Wallace and Ezra Coldwell scored for Maryville Christian (4-0-1).

The Dragons returned to the pitch early this week as they opened District 4-AA play at Kingston Tuesday night. Results were unavailable at press time. But Chunn said he knew his team would face a tough game against the defending district champion Yellow Jackets.

“They have a good side,” Chunn said. “They won the district last year.”

The Dragons will host Campbell County Thursday in a non-league tilt. The Cougars have been plagued by adversity as their head coach is currently suspended.
