Dragons earn split in two close games decided by one goal each

Clinton High School boys soccer Coach Gene Chunn is watching his team make constant improvement on the pitch this spring.

The Dragons closed out last week with a 2-1 victory at home Thursday night against Campbell County in a hard-fought match.

“That was a really close game and (Campbell County) played hard until the final horn went off,” Chunn said. “I was glad when that game was over.

“They really have some good players. Their interim coach is doing a good job with them and they’ve been through a lot.”

Owen Gray scored twice for the Dragons (3-5 overall, 0-1 in District 5-AA) against the Cougars, who saw their head coach placed on suspension recently.

On Tuesday, April 4, Clinton dropped its district opener to Kingston at home.

The Dragons played the Yellow Jackets to a 1-1 draw in regulation, thanks to a marker by Gray. But after the game’s outcome couldn’t be decided in overtime, Kingston claimed a 3-2 victory on penalty kicks.

Despite the loss, Chunn couldn’t fault his side’s effort.

“We really played well,” he said. “That was one of our best games of the year.

“You’re still not happy with the results, because as a coach, you always want to win.

“But I was really happy with the effort the guys gave and I was really pleased with how hard we played,” Chunn said. “We’re young and we’re continuing to get better, but it’s a little frustrating when you don’t get the results.”
