After tough start, Mavs have won two of four on the pitch

After enduring a rocky start, the Anderson County High School boys soccer team has claimed victories in its last four matches.

The Mavericks (2-4 overall, 0-1 in District 5-AA) won their last match, shutting out Rockwood 5-0 at home Thursday night.

In that match, Caiden Miller scored twice and Andrew Wilson chipped in by tallying a goal and dishing out an assist against the Tigers.

Kyden Torres and Kaden Humphrey also scored in the match for the Mavericks, who opened the 2023 on the wrong end of lopsided shutouts against Lenoir City, 9-0, and William Blount. 6-0, just after Spring Break.

ACHS then defeated Harriman 4-0 on Thursday, March 30.

After a 6-0 loss to Knoxville Halls, the Mavs played Scott to a 2-2 regulation draw on Tuesday, April 4. But the match had to be settled by a penalty kicks shootout won by the Scott High Highlanders, 2-1.

Muller Gudino and Wilson had regulation markers for the Mavericks, while Martin Lechuga had the lone goal for ACHS in the shootout.

Mavs Coach Chris Curtin wasn’t happy after the game at Scott.

“I felt like we got sucked into a game of kickball,” he said. “I don’t think we played our game.”

The coach, however, is happy with the way his side has responded.

“I felt like the two games against Harriman and Rockwood gave us a chance to get some inexperienced players on the field and in the game early,” Curtin said.

“I’m really pleased with the way that our guys responded to those tough early losses.

“They were classy and they played until the final whistle,” the coach said.
