Moe White stymies Halls to secure key district matchup for the Mavs

Moe White pitched a gem of a baseball game to help Anderson County pick up a key road District 4-AAA win Monday night.

White, a junior right-handed pitcher for the Mavericks, threw a complete game.

He allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned) and walked one and hit a batter as he stymied the host Red Devils. The Mavericks defeated Halls 5-2 at Bob Polston Field at Halls Elementary School.

“This was a good win for us, especially after what they did to us last year when they beat us five times,” ACHS Coach Josh Boynton said.

“Halls is always a tough place to play; it’s 300 feet down the lines and (Halls Coach Doug) Polston always has a good team,” he said. “And you know they’re going to do things, play the game the right way.”

That’s why White was given the ball against the Red Devils (11-9 overall, 5-3 in the district).

“We called a lot of off-speed pitches,” Boynton said. “We called for off-speed pitches more than we did fastballs tonight.

“They’re a senior heavy team,” he said. “They have five or six seniors and they can get ahold of a fastball and turn one on you.

“Moe kept those guys off-balance, he dominated those guys.”

Halls never led in the contest. The Red Devils scored a run in the second after the Mavericks (18-9, 5-3) scored two in the top of the second frame. An RBI single by Reece Wilkerson made it 1-0 before an error by the Red Devils allowed a second run to come home.

The Mavericks took the lead for good in the fourth when Aydin Bond’s RBI single scored Morgan Clark to make it 3-2.

ACHS would add two more runs in the sixth. Luke Lankford had an RBI double and Lane Fletcher drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

“We had some timely hits,” Boynton said.

Despite getting a big win, Anderson County played some shaky defense at times against the Red Devils, committing five errors.

“That was the one negative thing,” Boynton said. “We’re going to have to clean up our defense.”

The Mavericks captured a 16-4 victory at Campbell County Thursday.
