A magical 2023 season will continue for the Clinton High School boys soccer team.

The Dragons, who hosted a district tournament match for the first time in recent memory, prevailed.

Clinton, which entered the postseason having won its final two regular-season games, kept its winning streak and its season going with a 3-1 victory Monday night in the District 5-AA elimination semifinal.

The Highlanders and the Dragons (11-7) were locked in a 0-0 tie at halftime before both sides combined to score four goals after the break.

Clinton got markers from Yefrin Amador Baquis, Owen Gray and Julio DeValle.

“It was a big night for us and we’ve made it to the region, but I want that championship,” CHS Coach Gene Chunn said. “It’s been a great year, and all the credit goes to the boys, to the players, because they’ve bought into what we’re doing.

“They’re not the most-skilled soccer players, but they play hard and they have a great work ethic.

“It’s a great group of young men and they’re young men of high character,” he said.

Each goal was assisted against the Highlanders. Gray assisted on Baquis’ marker. Gray’s tally was assisted by Robino Rivera. DeValle received a helper from Zyrus Drew.

At press time, the Dragons were awaiting news of the winner of Tuesday’s semifinal match between Anderson County and Kingston.

Championship date, time and site will be determined later this week.

After the championship game, Clinton will play in the Region 3-AA tournament semifinals next Tuesday
