Clinton YAB wins ‘March Madness’
The competition started with 50 different schools in the state of Tennessee, and Clinton was the one that came out on top.
The students of Clinton High School competed against White Station Key Club in Memphis for the final round, and won.
It all came down to Facebook likes on the videos created by the students. Clinton had 881 votes after 24 hours of voting, while White Station, located in Memphis, had 593.
The group plans to use the $5,000 to plant cherry blossom trees on Main Street and do an art installation at Terrapin Hill.
The CHS Youth Board worked with sixth-graders at South Clinton Elementary to determine what materials would be best suited for an art installation in this area.
Augusta Ridley led this project and also had her sixth-grade class present hypothetical business models to give a glimpse of what kids would like to see in their hometown downtown.
Christa Frost, CHS business teacher, will receive $1,000 in “fun only” money as the club’s advisor.
“We sincerely believe that the students who formed the first ever Historic Downtown Clinton Youth Board are the future of our community,” Katherine Birkbeck of Historic Downtown Clinton said.
“They spoke at City Council, gave interviews on WYSH, volunteered at community events, interviewed community leaders, and begged their family, friends and peers to support them.
“They came out victorious because we live in a community of people who care and support the next generation,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who voted.”
Over the course of six winning rounds, the Historic Downtown Clinton Youth Board received 3,484 likes on its videos about downtown Clinton, and had 32,400 views.
