STEM educators gather for a day of learning

On Thursday, June 22, local educators gathered for the STEM. LD Summer Institute, a free full-day professional learning event designed specifically for K-12 STEM educators.

Several concurrent sessions throughout the day focused on sharing innovative instructional strategies and hands-on learning activities and/or demonstrations. Session facilitators included several STEM.LD partners, participants, and other STEM educators.

Representatives from Purdue University, STEM Education Works, TNTP, BioBuilder, East Tennessee State University, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Center for Excellence in STEM Education @ ETSU, Walters State Community College, and several regional school systems (Unicoi County Schools, Hawkins County Schools, Johnson City Schools, Greeneville City Schools, Anderson County Schools, Kingsport City Schools, Jefferson County Schools) were present and available for comment.

Funded by an $8.8 million federal research grant, the Niswonger Foundation’s STEM.LD project is geared toward increasing student success and improving student outcomes in STEM courses.

Through participation in STEM.LD, schools connect with several regional and national partners to enhance their school’s STEM offerings, whether it is through STEM courses, out-of-school time student activities, or professional development opportunities.
