Lakers beat Sunbright
The 2023 football season has been a struggle for Lake City Middle School, but Coach Brandon Duncan said the Lakers had their best week of the campaign.
Lake City won its first game as it defeated Sunbright 12-6 on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Lakers, however, came up on the short end of a 36-0 decision against LaFollette. But still, Duncan was pleased after that contest Thursday night, he said.
“We really played well in that game. At halftime, it was 8-0 and they scored late in the first half, with 10 seconds left.” Duncan said after the loss. “It really should’ve been 0-0 at halftime.
The coach also noted that the Lakers are continuing to improve, despite suffering a multitude of injuries and other adversity.
“I’m seeing the kids buy in,” Duncan said.
The Lakers opened the week with a 12-6 victory over Sunbright, which entered the contest with one of the areas youngest teams.
“It was really good to see these kids get a win,” Duncan said. “Sunbright had a young team and we knew that.”
Quarterback Jayden Nolan accounted the Lakers’ touchdowns as he had a 70-yard scoring scamper and threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Scott.
Lake City plays Jacksboro Thursday at 7 p.m.
