Lady Mavs win district

In a match that couldn’t be decided in 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, Anderson County finally emerged as the District 4-AA girls soccer champion.

In a game that ended in a 0-0 draw after 100 minutes, the Lady Mavericks were declared tournament champions. ACHS, the top seed in the tournament, outlasted No. 2 Gibbs, 4-3, in a penalty kicks shootout.

Makayla Prinkki, Emma Leander, Zoey Rose and Millie Swisher all found the back of the net in the shootout.

The win in the shootout not only netted the Lady Mavericks a district title, it earned them the right to host a Region 2-AA Tournament elimination semifinal against Carter. That match was played at ACHS Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

The Lady Eagles also advanced to the region semifinals, but they were on the road, as they traveled to face Seymour.

Lady Mavs Coach Chris Curtin said he was glad to see his team claim the district title against a tough Gibbs side that lost to Anderson County 3-2 in the regular season.

“Gibbs is a very good team,” Curtin said. “I feel pretty good heading into the region. I’m glad to be playing at home (in the semifinals), and the injury report looks good.”

Tuesday night’s winners will advance to the region championship match, which will be played Thursday night.

They’ll also advance to Saturday’s state sectional round where they’ll compete for a spot in the coming state tournament.
