Anderson County cruised into the second round of the TSSAA Class 4A football playoffs by recording its second shutout of the 2023 season at home Friday night.

The Mavericks blanked Sullivan East 49-0 in the opening round of the 2023 postseason, continuing their quest to defend their 2022 state championship.

Senior running back and Tennessee Titans Mr. Football semifinalist Nick Moog paced the rushing attack for ACHS (7-4) as he ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.

Senior quarterback Zae Hall put up another solid performance against the Patriots, who finished the campaign with a 6-5 record.

Hall was 10-of-14 through the air, amassing 198 passing yards and throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Daylen Cole.

Trent Strickland and Taylor Davis had eight tackles each for the Mavericks, who will host a second-round playoff tilt against rival Elizabethton (9-1).

The Cyclones, who finished second in Region 1-4A, shut out Carter 49-0 in other first-round playoff action last week.

The Mavericks and Cyclones have not played this season. But the two teams tangled on the gridiron twice in 2022. The Mavs won a 35-34 overtime thriller during the regular season after falling behind early.

Anderson County edged Elizabethton 30-24 in last year’s playoffs on its way to completing a 15-0 season and capturing the Class 4A state championship, the first football title in school history.

Moog named Tennessee Titans Mr. Football semifinalist:

Moog, who had another solid performance against the Patriots to open postseason play last week, was recently named a Tennessee Titans Mr. Football semifinalist.

Moog, a two-way starter for Anderson County, despite missing time due to injury, has rushed for 1,116 yards and 25 touchdowns through the first round of the playoffs. He also plays linebacker for the Mavericks.
