Lady Mavs begin season
ACHS girls split first four games of 2023-24 campaign
After seeing his team split its first four games, Anderson County High School girls basketball Coach Mitch Cupples was pleased, as his team was a bit short-handed.
The Lady Mavericks played two games Saturday and put up a valiant effort against Oak Ridge on the road Saturday night before falling to the Lady Wildcats 46-40 at Wildcat Arena.
“I was really pleased with our effort, gutting that out with four of our top four players out,” Cupples said. “Bralee Hall and Bailey Newman got hurt in the game, and Bethany Lowe and Kyrsten Campbell didn’t even come to the game because they were sick.”
Hall was ACHS’s leading scorer against the Lady Wildcats (3-0), despite exiting the contest in the third quarter, as she had 11 points. Senior point guard Jaylynn Bullock had 10 points.
Earlier Saturday, the Lady Mavs routed Fulton 59-24 as Bullock had a game-high 23 points and Addison Grooms added 10 for Anderson County, which led the Lady Falcons 30-10 at halftime.
“We played really well,” Couples said. “We were up 30-10, and we actually extended our lead, Cupples said. “When we played Kingston (earlier in the week), we had a lead at halftime and they came back and cut it to six, so I liked the way responded.
“We beat (Fulton) pretty soundly and we played a really good team game.”
ACHS defeated the Lady Jackets, 54-47, on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
Lowe scored 15 points. Bullock and Macy Basford had 11 points each.
ACHS also played Alcoa on Nov. 14, and came up on the short end of a 68-39 decision.
Basford scored 14 points to pace the Lady Mavericks’ attack.
Mavericks lose three out of four: ACHS played two of the area’s toughest teams Saturday in Oak Ridge, losing to Fulton, 80-58, and dropping a 75-52 decision to the host Wildcats at Wildcat Arena.
Anderson County split two contests Thursday, losing to Kingston, 68-53, and edging Heritage. 63-57.
