Boring signs to become one of the ‘Few’
She picked up the scholarship in a ceremony at ACHS.
Boring said her first choice will be to attend Vanderbilt University. She said she became interested in joining the Marines while involved in ROTC at ACHS.
“I found my niche in ROTC,” she said. “I decided that I could use my leadership skills and physical fitness where it could benefit me the most.
“My first choice is Vanderbilt, but for the scholarship, I had to pick my top five schools, and I’m expecting an acceptance letter in the next few days.”
The other schools on her list include Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue, Duke and Rice.
She said that she’s looking at two different choices of study.
“I want to major in biochemistry, but neurology is also an option,” Boring said.
She’ll enroll in school in the fall and attend three years, then between her junior and senior years, she’ll begin her military training.
“I’ll pretty much have a normal college experience,” Boring said. “And then, between my junior and senior years, I’ll go to boot camp. For me, it will be OCS, officer commissioning school.”
She said that she won’t run competitively in college.
“The Marine Corps has its own athletics team, but I’m not the best runner,” Boring said.
“But I’m well-rounded.”
Once she completes officer commissioning school, Boring will have a choice of where she will be deployed.
“Depending on family situations, I could stay close to home, but I’d like to go to Okinawa,” she said.
