The 2023 portion of the wrestling schedule ended on a high note for Anderson County High School.

The Mavericks, who have battled adversity, including injuries and illness, wrestled in a tournament at Soddy-Daisy Thursday.

ACHS had three medalists in Southeast Tennessee as Josh Bingham finished third in the 165-pound weight class.

The Mavs had a pair of fourth-place finishers, including Tripp Haire, who competes in the 113-pound division, and Slade Alley, who competes in the heavyweight division.

Coach Matt Slone said he was pleased with his team’s effort last week.

“We got some people back, and overall I think we wrestled pretty well under the circumstances,” Slone said. “The tournament at Soddy-Daisy was a tough tournament.

“There were a lot of private schools there, like Boyd Buchanan, Pope John Paul II, McCallie; and then they had Dalton, a team from Georgia, and I think they ended up winning it.”

The Mavericks opened the week at home on Tuesday, Dec. 19, as they defeated Powell and Scott in impressive fashion.

Anderson County will take a brief holiday break before returning to the mats on Jan. 6, at the Maryville Invitational, a top tournament in East Tennessee.

“We’ll be off next week and hopefully we can get everybody healthy as we head into the home stretch,” Slone said.

“We don’t have a lot of time, because once you get into late January, you start postseason duals, like the district duals and the regional duals.”
