New website improves accessibility
The city of Oak Ridge recently updated its website, oakridgetn.gov, and the current site’s features will make it easier for people with disabilities to read.
Lauren Gray, the city;s communications specialist, said the new website is intended to make text-to-speech easier. Also, it makes it easier for software to describe images or read text from them.
The city has also chosen colors that people with color blindness or low vision can read easily.
The website, as updated, meets current Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
“The goal is to keep our website accessible ... for as long as it needs to be maintained,” Gray said.
Apart from the disabilities-related improvements, the city has said the new site is also easier to navigate. It includes a search feature that’s prominently placed in the center of the home page.
The site has a more-prominent navigation bar, with quick links to features like online bill payment, agendas and minutes, the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, and more.
Visitors can submit comments, questions, and suggestions related to the new website by clicking the button in the center of the page for “Report a Concern” or by visiting oakridgetn.gov/report.
