In its return to the floor after a long hiatus due to recent inclement weather, the Anderson County High School boys basketball team split a pair of District 4-AAA road games.

On Thursday, the Mavericks ran past Union County 76-61 in Maynardville. The game was moved to UCHS due to lighting problems in the ACHS gym.

The rematch in Clinton, between the Patriots and Mavericks, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“We have a big week this week,” ACHS Coach Jordan Jeffers said. “We have three games and they’re all at home, and we need to win all three of them.”

The Mavericks (14-8 overall, 6-1 in the district) opened this week on a positive note as they routed Scott 73-38 and notched the season sweep against the Highlanders.

ACHS hosted Cumberland Gap Tuesday but results were not available at press time,

Last week, the Mavs followed Thursday night’s win with a 69-63 loss to Gibbs in Corryton.

Despite seeing his squad split a pair of league games, Jeffers wasn’t happy with his team’s performance.

“We just didn’t play well last week,” he said. “I thought against Union, both teams were really rusty.”

Ryan McGhee and Hayden Craig each scored 15 points against the Patriots. Cole Russell added 11 points against the Patriots.

Against the Eagles, Cole Russell, Brandon Dake, and Cam Lawson had 13 points each, while Daylen Cole finished with 12.

With the win, Gibbs salvaged a regular-season split with the Mavericks.

Anderson County defeated the Eagles 98-70 in the teams’ other meeting at ACHS.

“We just didn’t play well and Gibbs shot the ball well,” Jeffers said. “It’s funny, they scored 70 points against us here and we won. Over there, they scored 69 points and they beat us.

“They played hard and they deserved to win the game.”
