Lady Dragons give solid performance at HVA

Clinton High School’s softball team competed in the Region 2 Challenge at Hardin Valley Academy late last week.

The Lady Dragons closed tournament play with a morning game as they shut out the host Lady Hawks, 8-0, Saturday.

Bree McKamey, Lynlee Adkins and Sara Bishop all had two hits in the tournament finale for Clinton, which won all three of its game but opted not to play in the tournament championship game so the players could attend the school’s prom.

McKamey also had two RBIs and two runs. Bishop drove in two runs and scored another. She also recorded a stolen base, while Adkins drove in a run.

Clinton pitchers Elizabeth Maples and McKenna Gavin combined on a one-hit shutout.

The Lady Dragons played two games Friday as they edged Tazewell (Virginia), a regular at the annual late-season tournament, 4-3.

Leadoff hitter and shortstop Tomi Taylor tripled and scored against the Lady Bulldogs, while Bishop had two hits and drove in two runs. McKamey had a hit and sacrifice fly. She drove in a run. Adkins doubled and drove in a run, while Taylor Sherwood doubled, scored and drove in two runs.

In their second game Friday, the Lady Dragons shut out one of the state’s top teams as they blanked DeKalb County, 3-0.

Sherwood and Mandy Chambers each had two hits and Chambers drove in two runs, while Adkins came up with a single and an RBI.

Clinton coach Leonard Sams said he was pleased with the way his team played in the tournament.

“Those were some good teams. The game that was really big for us was the game against DeKalb County. They’re a great team.

“They’re one of the best teams from Middle Tennessee.”

On Thursday, Clinton run-ruled Union County in a District 4-AAA contest, notching a 13-3 victory. The Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Dragons, 6-3, on April 22.

Clinton lost to Powell, 6-2, on Tuesday, April 23 before shutting out Cumberland Gap, 3-0, the following day.
