Mavericks win two non-district matches

Anderson County High School’s soccer team won a pair of non-district matches last week.

The Mavericks, who recently outlasted rival Clinton, 4-3, in overtime, defeated Rockwood Thursday on the road. They also got past Campbell County, 6-1, on Tuesday, April 22.

“We had a little bit of trouble because at Rockwood, it’s a grass field,” said Anderson County coach Chris Curtin. “It’s a nice grass field, but it does slow things down a bit.”

Once the Mavericks adapted, however, they took care of the Tigers easily as Foster Madron and Charlie Pemberton scored two goals apiece. Caiden Miller and Jackson Payne also added markers for Anderson County.

Against Campbell County, Pemberton had two goals. Andrew Wilson, Muller Gudino, Jorge Valles and Payne also found the back of the net in the match.

ACHS also split a pair of matches during the week of April 15.

The Mavs lost to Oneida on Thursday, April 18.

“They had some speed that we weren’t quite prepared for and they really exposed some things that we need to clean up.”

The Mavericks prevailed, 4-3, in overtime against the Dragons on Tuesday, April 16 despite Clinton getting two goals and an assist from Gutierrez, who provided a helper on a marker by Julio Del Valle.

Guidino had two goals for the Mavericks, while Wilson and Kayden Humphrey each scored once.

Curtin said the Dragons put up a solid effort against his side.

“They really played hard and they played well. I was happy for (Clinton coach Gene (Chunn),” Curtin said. “We missed a few opportunities and I really didn’t think the game had to go to overtime but it did.

“But they really played well.”
