Dragons beat Union County in district match

Clinton High School’s boys soccer team continued to experience growing pains last week, but the Dragons did notch a 1-0 District 4-AA victory over Union County on Tuesday, April 22.

Cristian Gutierrez scored the lone goal of the match and Robino Rivera made nine saves against the Patriots en route to recording his first clean sheet of the 2024 season.

Dragons’ coach Gene Chunn said that his team posted a solid effort on its way to picking up its first league win of the season.

“We played pretty well and it was a really good game,” Chunn said. “Their coach up there has really done a good job.

“I had Robino in goal and he made three great saves.”

The Dragons, however, couldn’t keep the momentum going as they lost, 8-0, to Gibbs Friday night after putting up a valiant effort in the opening half against the Eagles.

“We played pretty well in the first half and I made some changes and they scored some goals,” Chunn said. “I have a young team and I have four freshmen on the back line.

“I have a young team and these guys are going to be better next year and the year after.”

On Thursday, April 18, the Dragons lost to Scott, 6-2, after playing one of its best matches of the season against crosstown rival Anderson County.

The Mavericks prevailed, 4-3, in overtime despite Clinton getting two goals and an assist from Gutierrez, who provided a helper on a marker by Julio Del Valle.

Muller Guidino had two goals for the Mavericks, while Andrew Wilson and Kayden Humphrey each scored once.

ACHS coach Chris Curtin said the Dragons put up a solid effort against his side.

“They really played hard and they played well. I was happy for Gene,” Curtin said. “We missed a few opportunities and I really didn’t think the game had to go to overtime but it did.

“But they really played well.”
