David Farmer: Retired, U.S. Army

“I would like to see us serve veterans and the community,” said David Farmer, an Army veteran who was recently elected as commander of Anderson County American Legion Post 172.

Farmer, a 1966 graduate of Clinton High School, was drafted into the Army in 1970.

He spent nine years on active duty and 18 years as a reservist.

In the Army, he was able to complete his college education, and after attending Officer Candidate School, Farmer was commissioned an officer. He left active duty as a first lieutenant and retired from the Reserves in 1997 as a major.

His assignments included Fort Lee, Va., Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Sill, Okla.

As a reservist, Farmer was sent to Bosnia. The best assignment he ever had was as a sergeant with an explosives ordnance detachment, he said.

While admitting that every day wasn’t fun, Farmer went on to say, “All in all, the Army was good to me.”

In between active-duty assignments as a reservist, he worked several jobs, including real estate sales, insurance and retail security.
