Mavericks ‘golden’ at championship meet

  • Lady Mavericks distance specialist Ava Moody was a double state champion at the 2024 TSSAA Class AA Track and Field Championships. Moody finished first in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter races, finishing with times of 11:09.64 and 5:02.88, respectively.

  • Luke Dark is TSSAA Class AA state champion in the shot put. Dark’s throw of 57 feet, 5.75 inches was more than five feet farther than that of the second-place finisher.

  • Vance Laster finished first place and won the state title in the 3,200-meter race. Laster finished with a time of 9:40.93.

Anderson County High School’s track and field programs brought back some hardware from the TSSAA Class AA Track and Field Championships, which were held May 22 at Middle Tennessee State University’s Dean Hayes Stadium in Murfreesboro.

The Mavericks and Lady Mavericks combined to win four state championships at the Spring Fling in the Midstate.

Ava Moody, a distance specialist for the Lady Mavericks, won a pair of state titles as she claimed championships in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Moody crossed the finish line in 5 minutes, 2.88 seconds in the 1,600. She also won the 3,200 as she posted a time 11:09.64. She accounted for all 20 of ACHS’s points in the team standings.

In the boys’ state championships, the Mavericks finished eighth overall.

Sophomore Luke Dark won a state title in the shot put competition with a mark of 57 feet, 5.75 inches.

ACHS distance specialist Vance Laster won a pair of medals at state as he claimed the state championship in the 3.200-meter run, completing the race in 9:40.93.

He was also a member of the Mavericks’ 4x800 relay as he teamed with John Cutler, Ryan Basford and Ben Clotfelder to post a third-place finish in the event. The team clocked a time of 6:15.49.

Sprinter Waylon LaRue finished third in the 100-meter dash as he recorded a time of 11.18 seconds.
