Mavericks golfers win home match by double digits

The Anderson County High School golf teams each posted impressive showings Thursday at a three-way match at Centennial Golf Course in Oak Ridge.

The Mavericks, who played against Clinton and Campbell County, had one of their best performances of the young season as they lapped the competition, defeating the Dragons by 21 strokes and topping the Cougars by 22 shots.

Anderson County’s four scorers all shot under 40 on the par-35 front nine of the course.

“The kids played really well, and they’re showing great improvement as the year goes on,” Mavericks Coach Patrick Leverton said. “Our kids are really working hard, and I think we’ll continue to get better if they continue to work.”

Senior Caden Williams, a transfer from Powell High School, and Peyton Warwick each posted an even round. Both fired a 35. Luke Baldwin finished with a 37, and Hoyt Chadwell carded a 39 to round out the scoring for Anderson County.

Leverton said that Williams has joined the program and provided some leadership for the Mavericks.

“Caden has come in and he’s been good for our younger kids,” Leverton said. “Peyton has really played well, and Luke and Hoyt are really stepping up their game.

“I’m really proud of our kids, both the boys and the girls,” the coach said. “I’m proud of their effort. They’ve all been putting in a lot of time. Our boys and our girls, to some extent, really spend a lot of time playing together, and that competition, playing with and against each other, is only making them better.

“I’m extremely proud of them,” he said. “There’s really so much to be proud of.”

The Lady Mavs, meanwhile, came away with a 91-103 victory against the Lady Dragons, as Sydney May finished with a 40 and Coy Tomlinson had a 51.
