Wildcats edge Admirals by two strokes, beat Yellow Jackets by 26 strokes in three-way golf match at Fox Den Country Club

Oak Ridge High School’s boys golf team had its first official three-way match of the 2024 season against a state powerhouse late last week, and the Wildcats prevailed.

They edged Farragut and topped Kingston on Thursday at Fox Den Country Club, the Admirals’ home course.

The Wildcats finished with a team score of 159, besting the Admirals (161) by two strokes. Kingston was well off the pace as it finished with a team total of 185.

Oak Ridge, Farragut, and the Yellow Jackets played the front nine Thursday afternoon. Oak Ridge had one golfer shoot even par, as Hunter Hinton carded a 36 and claimed low medalist honors for the day.

“Hunter played really well, and this was a big win for us,” Oak Ridge Coach Scott Hinton said. “You beat Farragut with your No. 3 guy shooting a 36 and your No. 2 guy shooting 37 and your No. 1 guy shooting a 40.”

Hunter Hinton, the coach’s son, led all scorers in the field

Lewis Niad fired a 1-over 37, while Jack Bentz (+4) finished with a 40. Kaleb Jackson rallied a 46, while Bryson Pemberton scored a 48. Bentz, a senior, is Oak Ridge’s No. 1 player on the ladder. Niad occupies the No. 2 spot, and Hunter Hinton plays at No. 3. Niad and Farragut’s Hudson Capps both finished at +1.

“This was a good first official match for us,” Coach Hinton said.

The Lady Wildcats were also in action against the Lady Admirals on Thursday. Farragut defeated Oak Ridge 77-116.

The Lady Admirals’ Harper Holmes was the low medalist for the girls, as she fired a 2-under 34. Farragut’s Ava Snafe finished with a 43.

Oak Ridge’s Kaiya Barnes finished with a 53, while Kaeden Hollander posted a 63.

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats hosted their first home match Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.
