The 2024 volleyball season opened on a high note for the Clinton High School team Monday night at The King’s Academy in Seymour.

The Lady Dragons, who won both the District 3-AAA regular-season title and postseason tournament championship in 2023, began the new campaign with a pair of best-of-three sweeps. They defeated the host Lady Lions (25-17, 25-12) and the Knoxville Trailblazers, a team comprising home-schooled athletes (25-20, 27-25).

Clinton Coach Lorri Johnson said she was pleased with her team’s performance on the road.

“I’m satisfied for a first night in a foreign gym,” she said. “The King’s Academy has a lot of good, young potential, and the Trailblazers have a lot of good players who can go on to play at the next level if they get the opportunity.

“But we have a lot of work to do,” she said. “I would like to see us be more consistent and not have so many unforced errors. We had a lot of those.”

Against the host Lady Lions, Clinton’s seasoned veterans led the way as Josie Moody finished with eight kills and five assists.

Lainee Carmichael contributed three kills and eight digs.

Parker McGhee sparked the Lady Dragons’ service game with five aces.

Keagan Skaggs added two aces and dished out 11 assists.

Ellie Murrell recorded two kills and one block.

In the nightcap against the Trailblazers, Moody had 10 kills and eight assists.

Skaggs tallied 13 assists. McGhee totaled five aces and five kills.

Murrell added two kills, two aces, and one block. Jailie Rodd finished with three kills.

McKenzie Crisp had seven digs, and Carmichael had two kills and five digs.
