Lady Mavs and Mavs excel in tight contests on the course

Anderson County High School’s golf teams continued their success on the links last week.

The girls’ team recorded a pair of narrow wins in three-way matches, defeating Concord Christian School and Oak Ridge on Thursday at Oak Ridge Country Club.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mavericks edged crosstown rival Clinton by one stroke at Centennial Golf Course.

On Thursday, Anderson County edged the Concord Christian Lady Lions by a single shot, finishing with a team score of 93.

Campbell County shot 94, and Oak Ridge finished with 109.

Sydney May led ACHS as the top scorer, shooting a 4-over 40 on the front nine. Molly Jackson scored a 53 for the Lady Mavericks.

“Sydney played very well, and I was really pleased with her performance,” ACHS Coach Patrick Leverton said.

“It was her best performance of the season.”

The Lady Mavericks opened the week on Tuesday, Aug. 13, with a win against the Clinton Lady Dragons, prevailing 95-96.

“It was good for us to win that close match against Clinton,” Leverton said.

May shot 45, while Jackson carded a 50 on the par-35 front nine.

The boys’ team was involved in a tight three-way match on Thursday at Oak Ridge Country Club.

The host Oak Ridge Wildcats won the match with a team total of 153. The Lions finished with a team score of 156, and the Mavericks totaled 157.

Despite the third-place finish, Leverton said he was pleased with Anderson County’s performance.

“You had three really good teams in that match, and it was good to see us battle with Oak Ridge and Concord,” he said. “This was a good test for us.”

Caleb Williams led the Mavericks with a 1-over 37. Peyton Warwick, Luke Baldwin, and Hoyt Chadwell each finished with a 40.

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, Anderson County defeated Clinton 158-169. Karns was at the event but didn’t have enough players to qualify as a team.

Chadwell and Williams both shot a 35. Warwick scored a 40, and Gavin Drake finished with a 45.
