Ward’s performance stings Hornets in Hawks’ homecoming victory
Junior Ward won’t soon forget Clinton Middle School’s 2024 homecoming game.
The Hawks’ running back rushed for three touchdowns and added a two-point conversion, leading Clinton to its first win of the season.
Ward scored on runs of 13, 23, and 43 yards as Clinton defeated Carter 37-14, securing a homecoming victory for the CMS alumni.
Ward had a standout performance, but also received strong support from his teammates.
Quarterback Benji Yarbrough threw two touchdown passes: a 28-yard strike to Colton Wright and a 43-yard pass to Heriberto Tirado. Yarbrough also scored on a successful two-point conversion.
Kicker Caleb Egeland made two extra points, a first for the Hawks, according to coach Eric Woodard.
“We kicked two extra points, and I don’t ever remember Clinton ever kicking extra points,” said Woodard, the Hawks’ second-year head coach.
Defensively, Clinton earned a safety by tackling the Hornets in their own end zone. Aiden Cagle-Story was the Hawks’ top defensive performer with eight tackles and four sacks.
Woodard was pleased with the team’s performance.
“Our kids played really well, and this really feels good,” he said.
The celebration, however, will be short-lived. The Hawks (1-3) face Robertsville (3-1) on Thursday. The Rams are coming off a 64-58 overtime loss to Grace Christian Academy.
