Anderson County High School’s football team continued its long league winning streak with a 42-7 victory over Carter on Saturday night in a Region 2-4A matchup at home.

The Mavericks’ most recent game was delayed by a night due to inclement weather.

Once they hit the field, Anderson County (5-0, 3-0 Region 2-4A) dominated, securing its 42nd- consecutive league win. The Mavericks have not lost a region game since 2016.

Against the Hornets (3-3, 1-1), Anderson County took a 14-0 lead before its offense even stepped onto the field.

Trent Strickland made a major play on special teams, returning the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. Kicker Jackson Payne added the extra point, making it 7-0 with 11:43 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mavericks’ defense then pinned Carter deep in its own territory, leading to Logan Crumpley blocking a Hornets punt. Zach Hapney recovered the ball in the end zone, extending the lead to 14-0.

In the second quarter, Waylon LaRue scored two rushing touchdowns, the second following an interception by Strickland, giving Anderson County a commanding 28-0 halftime lead.

The Mavericks activated the TSSAA mercy rule in the third quarter when senior quarterback Landen Hensley connected with Israel Small for a touchdown.

Payne’s PAT extended the lead to 35-0, and the running clock was in effect for the rest of the game.

Hensley later threw a touchdown pass to Taylor Davis, making the score 42-0 in the final quarter.

Carter managed to score a late touchdown to avoid the shutout.

Strickland shined on offense, defense, and special teams.

In addition to his kick return touchdown and interception, he recorded five tackles and had 48 receiving yards.

Hensley completed 9 of 13 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

LaRue rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on his 20 carries.

Defensively, Cody Miller led the Mavericks with 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss and a sack.

Anderson County will host crosstown rival Clinton (2-4) on Friday in a non-region game.

Clinton is coming off a 48-21 Region 3-5A loss to Oak Ridge.
