Weather disrupts Lady Dragons soccer schedule

Clinton senior Abby Hutchens kicks the ball back into play during a recent home match. The Lady Dragons (8-3-1 overall, 3-1 in District 4-AA) have secured the No. 2 seed in the coming district tournament.
Inclement weather wreaked havoc on the Clinton High School girls soccer team’s schedule last week.

The Lady Dragons (8-3-1 overall, 3-1 in District 4-AA) had games canceled on both Thursday and Saturday due to rain.

Clinton was set to play Rockwood on Thursday, but the match was rained out.

On Saturday, the Lady Dragons were scheduled to visit Anderson County for a non-district match in honor of the Lady Mavericks’ senior night.

However, Friday’s rain caused Knox County Schools to cancel classes, which led to Anderson County’s Region 2-4A game against Carter being rescheduled for Saturday, forcing the Clinton match to be canceled.

“We weren’t able to play Thursday, and we weren’t able to play Saturday,” said Lady Dragons Coach Suzanne Stout. “We won’t make up those games. They’re just gone.”

Despite the weather disruptions, Clinton secured the No. 2 seed for the coming District 4-AA tournament with a 4-1 victory over Gibbs on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Lady Dragons’ only match last week.

Elly Leander recorded a hat trick against the Lady Eagles, while Sadie Haney scored and provided an assist.

Topanga Easterday contributed two assists, and Jemi Carmaaco-Chinchilla added an assist as the Lady Dragons snapped a two-match losing streak.

Prior to the win, Clinton lost to South-Doyle 3-1 Sept. 17, and fell to crosstown rival Anderson County 5-1 Sept. 19.

“That was a big win for us, and we’ve had a good season,” Stout said. “We lost a good midfielder last year and a couple of solid defenders, but some new girls have stepped up.

“I’d really like to have the South-Doyle game back, and hopefully, we’ll get the chance to play Anderson County again in the district tournament.”

Clinton hosted Harriman on Monday, but results were not available at press time.

The Lady Dragons will host Union County in the opening round of the District 4-AA tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
