Russell steps down as ACHS softball coach to prioritize family
“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” said Russell, who accumulated 180 wins during his tenure with the Lady Mavericks. “I had multiple conversations with my wife over several months. We even discussed staying another year, but ultimately decided stepping away was best for everyone.”
Russell’s decision is based on his desire to spend more time with his daughters, Abbi, 6, and Avery, who is 6 months old.
“I want to be there for Abbi, especially now that she’s getting involved in activities,” Russell said. “I want to make it clear, though: This team is in great shape. There’s a lot of talent here. I’m not leaving because anything is wrong.”
Russell emphasized that he didn’t want to continue coaching unless he could be fully committed. “I’ve always told the girls, ‘If you come out to softball, be all in. If not, you shouldn’t be out here.’”
Although Russell is stepping away from coaching, he will continue teaching special education at the school and remain involved in the athletic program.
“Abbi likes sports, and every day, she’s at practice with me, whether it’s softball, volleyball, or basketball,” Russell said. “She’s shy, but she loves watching the girls practice.”
In addition to his time coaching softball, Russell spent more than a decade with the school’s baseball program. While he is leaving coaching for now, he hasn’t ruled out a return in the future.
The Lady Mavericks are left in a strong position with talented players, and Russell believes the program will continue to thrive.
For now, though, Russell, who is 41, is focused on his family. “The best part now is that I can go home when I want to,” he said.
