Lady Mavs claim District 4-AA soccer title
After an undefeated run through the District 4-AA regular-season schedule, Anderson County High School’s soccer team claimed the district tournament championship Thursday night with a 5-1 victory over crosstown rival Clinton at home.
Emma Leander scored four goals in the title match for Anderson County (10-6-1), while Megan Shock added the other goal for the Lady Mavericks against the Lady Dragons (10-4-1).
Elly Leander scored the lone goal for Clinton, which also lost 5-1 to Anderson County in their regular-season match.
Lady Mavericks coach Chris Curtin expressed pride in winning another district championship but said his team still has more work ahead if they want to reach the Class AA state tournament in Chattanooga.
“It feels great to win another district championship and get home-field advantage for the two region tournament games,” Curtin said. “The district championship was our goal, but we also want to get to state.
“We want to host (Region 2-AA tournament games) Tuesday and Thursday, and we want to be playing at home Saturday (in the state sectionals),” he added.
Both Anderson County and Clinton advanced to the region tournament semifinals. The Lady Mavs, who reached the district title game after defeating Gibbs 3-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 8, hosted Carter in an elimination semifinal Tuesday. Clinton traveled to Seymour, which routed Carter 9-0 in the District 3-AA championship. Results were unavailable at press time.
Semifinal winners will advance to the region championship Thursday and qualify for Saturday’s state sectionals.
In the district semifinals on Oct. 8, Anderson County beat Gibbs 3-0. Emma Leander, Shock, and Lily Trent scored for the Lady Mavericks, and Leander also had an assist.
