Lady Mavericks are District 4-AA champions

Anderson County played its best volleyball of the season when it mattered most, sweeping their way through the District 4-AA Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Anderson County High School.

The Lady Mavericks (23-10), the No. 2 seed, claimed the district championship by defeating Alcoa 25-8, 25-17, 25-23, avenging their only league loss to the Lady Tornadoes.

After dominating the first two sets, Anderson County had to rally in the third and final game.

“It was good for us to get that win because the last time we played them, we made so many mistakes, but you have to give credit to that team for making plays,” Anderson County coach Jayme Smith said. “We watched the film of that game.”

In the third set, Alcoa made a lineup change, and Anderson County found themselves down 23-22 after a five-point service run by the Lady Tornadoes. The Lady Mavericks responded by scoring the last three points to win the set and secure the match.

The film session seemed to provide the Lady Mavericks with the motivation they needed, as they opened the tournament with a dominant 25-6, 25-11, 25-10 victory over South-Doyle.

“The girls came out and took care of business, and that’s what we stressed,” Smith said. “You definitely don’t want to give any team a chance to hang around.”

By winning the district title, Anderson County earned the right to host the Region 2-AA Tournament, which was played Tuesday at ACHS. Results were not available at press time.

In the region semifinals, Anderson County faced Seymour in an elimination match, while Alcoa took on District 3-AA champion Northview Academy. The winners of those matches advanced to the championship game and earned spots in the state sectionals, set for Thursday night.

All-District Tournament Team: Anderson County’s Alyssa Meier was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Shelby Kelly, Emerie Bullock, Bethany Lowe, and Kenzie Wilkerson.
