Mavericks wrestlers capture medals at Beatdown in the Mountains tourney

  • Anderson County’s Josh Bingham placed first in the 215-pound category at Saturday’s wrestling tournament held at Heritage High School in Blount county.

  • Anderson County’s Danielle Connors was the top finisher in the 126-pound weight class at the Beatdown in the Mountains tournament.

Anderson County High School’s wrestling teams had a successful weekend at the Beatdown in the Mountains tournament at Heritage High School in Maryville.

The Mavericks and Lady Mavericks combined to win three medals, including two championships, at the elite event featuring some of East Tennessee’s top teams.

The Mavericks could have earned more medals had the event recognized the top six finishers in each weight class. Unlike most tournaments, the Heritage event awards medals only to the top four wrestlers in each division.

“I fully expect we would have had more guys place if they had given medals to the top six,” ACHS Coach Matt Slone said.

“We would have had more guys finishing fifth or sixth. We had a handful of guys who scored team points,” he said.

“Some of our guys were frustrated, but you have to wrestle in these kinds of tournaments and matches if you want to get better and go to state,” Slone said.

“You had some of the best teams there from every classification. You had Lakeway Christian, Knoxville Halls, Samuel Everett Innovation Academy, Soddy-Daisy, Pigeon Forge and Independence.”

The Mavericks’ Josh Bingham won the championship in the 215-pound weight division. Danielle Connors, a 126-pounder for the Lady Mavericks, won her bracket’s title.

“Josh won a championship,” Slone said. “This was a very tough tournament, and Danielle had a big tournament. She beat a girl who finished third at state last year.”

Zed Hulet (126) placed third in his bracket.

Earlier last week, the Mavericks remained undefeated in dual meets, defeating Carter 48-12. and Scott 66-18.
