Lady Mavericks upset Scott
The rollercoaster ride that is the 2024-25 basketball season continued last week for the Anderson County High School girls.
The Lady Mavericks split two games, knocking off first-place Scott 59-54 at home on Tuesday, Jan. 28, before falling 44-38 to Union County on Friday night in Maynardville.
In Friday’s loss, Anderson County struggled offensively.
“Our biggest problem was that we just couldn’t score,” ACHS Coach Mitch Cupples said. “We missed a lot of (three-point shots) and a lot of twos, too. They ran a junk defense at us.”
Union County used a diamond-and-one defense to contain Anderson County’s top scorer, Macy Basford. A diamond-and-one defense is where the defense positions four players in a diamond shape on the court, and one defender focuses efforts on guarding the opponent’s top scorer.
“We missed shots and didn’t force enough turnovers,” Cupples said. “Union County hit big shots at big times, and every shot was big late because it was such a low-scoring game.
“For us, it’s about focusing from game to game and quarter to quarter. It’s about competing and doing the little things and not getting distracted. We can’t let a turnover or a missed shot take us out of the game. We’ve played better lately, after Christmas.”
Bethany Lowe led Anderson County with 14 points, while Shelby Kelly added 10.
Three nights earlier, the Lady Mavericks earned an impressive win over first-place Scott at home.
“We’ve just been inconsistent,” Cupples said.
“Scott is the No. 1 team in our district right now. We beat them, and then we turn around and lose to the No. 4 team.”
Basford paced Anderson County with 18 points against the Lady Highlanders. Lowe added 12, and sophomore center Addison Grooms finished with 10.
ACHS hosted Oneida on Monday and traveled to Powell on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Mavericks host crosstown rival Clinton on Friday, aiming to avenge an earlier loss to the Lady Dragons.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
