A trio of Clinton High School students placed second at a regional competition in crime scene investigation and are heading on to a state conference.

Hope Spangler, Deziree Thomspon and Dayton Hackworth medaled at Tennessee College of Applied Technology Harriman.

Next, their state conference will be from April 13-16 in Chattanooga.

Their teacher, Jennifer Hutchins, is also a reserve officer for Clinton Police Department.

The competitors were from her criminal justice class.

The competitions, Hutchins said, involve securing a mock crime scene, collecting evidence and taking a multiple-choice written exam.

Hutchins said the biggest challenge in this type of competition is “just remembering all the things that you need to do when you get to the crime scene.”

“If you’re not using your skills, sometimes you use them or you forget,” she said.

“They’re all three very quiet, and kind of keep to themselves,” she said, adding it was notable “for them to get in front of a panel and show those skills.”
