Wilkerson chooses Roane State Community College

Reece Wilkerson will continue his academic and athletic career at Roane State in the fall. He is joined by family members to celebrate his decision.
Wilkerson recently signed a national letter of intent to play at Roane State Community College, where he will also continue his education.
He had other opportunities, but said several factors led him to choose the Raiders.
“I had offers from Union College in Kentucky and from Kentucky Christian,” Wilkerson said. “I wanted to stay close to home because I wanted my family to have the chance to see me play.
“They’ve been with me and supported me since Day One, and they deserve that opportunity.”
Another major factor in his decision was Roane State Coach Christopher C. Hamsley.
“I love Coach Ham,” Wilkerson said. “He develops players and he’s in it for the players — not just himself.
“I loved the players, too. When I went on a visit, they gave me a tour of the facility, and I felt at home. I felt a connection with them.”
Wilkerson plans to enter Roane State as an undeclared major and hasn’t yet settled on a career path, although he said he hopes to stay involved in sports beyond college.
The location of the field also played a role in his decision.
“The baseball field is across the street from the campus,” he said. “So I can focus on school when I need to, and when it’s time to practice, I can go do my job there.”
Wilkerson previously attended First Baptist Academy in Powell, where he grew accustomed to smaller class sizes — something he appreciated and sought out in college.
“When I was in middle school, I went to a private Christian school in Powell,” he said. “We had small classes there. I like that. Roane State has a small campus, and everything is close together.
“You can park and you’re right there. Everything is not spread out.”
