After an extended spring break hiatus, Clinton High School’s track and field teams returned to action Tuesday, March 25, at Knoxville’s South-Doyle High School.

Both the Dragons and Lady Dragons turned in strong performances, and Coach Tim Kumes said he continues to see growth in the program.

“These kids are starting to see the opportunities that track and field can offer them,” Kumes said. “That’s great, but the sad thing is that a lot of them are juniors and seniors, and this is their first year doing track. Many are realizing they could’ve accomplished even more if they’d come out earlier.

“We’ve kind of developed a partnership with our new football coach (Jake Dawson), and he’s encouraged his guys to run track to work on their speed. We’ve had some real speedsters come over from the football team.”

One of those newcomers is junior Bryson Maddox, a standout in football and basketball.

He made his track debut at South-Doyle and had an immediate impact.

Maddox won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. He also finished third in the 200-meter dash (23.98 seconds) and took fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.55).

Ryker Armes also clocked 11.55 in the 100 to finish fifth, while Ryin Jones placed fifth in the 200 (24.11) and ninth in the 100 (11.65).

Lucas Butz, a returning state qualifier, continued his strong season by winning the 300-meter hurdles (42.76) and placing second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.00).

The Dragons’ 4x100-meter relay team finished second (46.16), while Konner Bayliss placed second in the 400 (53.47) and seventh in the 200 (24.30).

For the Lady Dragons, Sadie Haney had a big day, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.95), fourth in the 100 (13.73), and eighth in the long jump (13-3.5).

Senior distance runner Alli Hollified showed her versatility by finishing fifth in the 800 (2:59.67), eighth in the 1600 (6:21.12), ninth in the 400 (1:22.71), and ninth in the long jump (13-1).

Kenzlee Hutchison claimed victory in the shot put with a mark of 30 feet, 5 inches. She also took sixth in the 800 (3:02.31).

Ashleigh Alcott placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (23.29) and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (1:03.48).

Chalandra Ellis finished third in the discus (52-4) and fifth in the shot put (20-10).

In the 200, the Lady Dragons had three Top 10 finishers: Saviah Stewart (fifth, 29.17), Maliyah Drake (sixth, 29.59), and Laci Clevenger (ninth, 30.22). Clevenger also took 10th in the 100 (14.07).

Clinton’s girls’ 4x100-meter relay team also claimed second place, with a time of 56.96.
