Mavs’ hot bats lead weekend sweep
After opening the week by splitting its annual two-game District 4-AAA series with crosstown rival Clinton, the Anderson County High School baseball team reeled off four consecutive victories to close out the week.
The Mavericks (16-5 overall, 3-1 in the district) capped their victory run with a pair of wins Saturday, edging Maryville Christian School 11-10 in a slugfest.
Wil Ridenour went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored against the Eagles, while Nolan Benson smacked three doubles and drove in a run. Ty Wilson singled and had three RBIs, and Easton Beaty belted a two-run home run.
Earlier Saturday, Anderson County defeated Red Bank 6-2.
Strickland went 4-for-4 against the Lions, with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Beaty had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Alex Bond also collected two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
On Friday, the Mavericks met a familiar foe in former district rival Halls, and pulled off a 13-5 comeback win after falling behind 5-0 early.
ACHS stormed back with nine runs in the fourth inning. Comebacks have become a theme for the Mavericks this season.
“We tell our guys that we’re never down,” Anderson County Coach Josh Boynton said.
“We’ve come back multiple times this season,” he said. “We’ve had six-run and seven-run innings. We have an upperclassmen-led team, and these guys have to know that they’re always mentally in the ballgame.”
Strickland went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Blake Lowe was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Daniel Unthank singled and scored twice.
On Thursday, the Mavericks outlasted Portland 15-9.
Strickland and Beaty both homered. Jeremiah Owens had four hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored. Benson tallied two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs.
AJ Colorusso added two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, while scoring once. Bond had two hits, two runs, a stolen base and an RBI.
In the 4-3 loss to Clinton April 2, the Mavericks had five errors. Benson singled and scored, while Lowe singled and had two RBIs.
In the 10-4 win over the Dragons on April 1, Lowe went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Benson doubled and scored twice. Owens collected two hits, three RBIs and a run, while Strickland went 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.
