Strong performances mark ACHS, CHS tournament runs

Both Anderson County and Clinton high school softball teams competed over the weekend in the Gibbs Invitational, one of East Tennessee’s premier tournaments.

Anderson County went 3-0 in the event, posting wins over Tipton-Rosemark Academy, Union City and White County.

Clinton picked up a win over Christian Academy of Knoxville before falling to Mt. Juliet and Science Hill.

The Lady Mavericks opened tournament play Friday afternoon in Corryton,

They overcame a rough start in the opener, rallying from a 6-0 deficit to defeat Tipton-Rosemark 7-6 in walk-off fashion. Freshman Cindle Justice delivered the game-winning single.

Senior centerfielder and leadoff hitter Kaycee Baldwin went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

Freshman Bella Brummett was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Reece Brock singled and scored, while Alli McKamey added a hit and an RBI.

In Game 2, Anderson County rolled past Union City 9-1 behind a strong effort in the circle from Justice, who tossed a four-inning complete game. She surrendered one unearned run on one hit and two walks, while striking out five.

Maci Benge went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs. McKamey tripled and tallied three RBIs while scoring once. Baldwin added two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs. Brummett doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.

The Lady Mavericks capped their perfect tournament run Saturday with an 8-1 victory over White County. Addison Grooms earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings. She gave up one run on four hits and one walk, striking out four.

Ashton Thurman paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run. Brock was 3-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. Baldwin singled, drove in a run and scored twice.

“I was pleased with our effort,” Anderson County Coach Lindsey Verner said. “We played as a cohesive unit. Everything just came together for them. I’m hoping we can get some momentum from this — we have some tough games left.”

Clinton played all of its games Saturday, opening with a 2-1 win over CAK. Freshman Addison George pitched a three-inning complete game, allowing one run on three hits, striking out three.

Taylor Sherwood went 1-for-1 with two walks, one RBI, one stolen base and a run. McKenley Osborne singled and scored, and Lynlee Adkins a single and an RBI.

In a 6-5 loss to Mt. Juliet, the Lady Dragons collected 12 hits. Sherwood went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and one RBI. Sara Bishop and Elizabeth Graham had two hits each and one RBI apiece. Adkins, Elizabeth Maples and Topanga Easterday each singled and scored.

Clinton fell 4-0 to Science Hill in its finale, with Sherwood collecting the team’s only hit.

“We played some tough competition,” Clinton Coach Leonard Sams said.

“All three of those teams could be at state.”
