Clinton turns in top marks at CAK, South-Doyle

Clinton shotputter Kenzlee Hutchison captured first place at the Christian Academy of Knoxville meet with a throw of 29 feet.
As the Clinton High School track and field teams entered last week, Coach Tim Kumes could hardly contain his excitement.

He certainly had plenty to be enthused about, as the Dragons and Lady Dragons are both in the midst of their best season in years.

Clinton also welcomed back several of its top athletes from injury ahead of the Warrior Invitational at Christian Academy of Knoxville on Tuesday, April 8.

At CAK, the Lady Dragons won the shot put behind junior Kenzlee Hutchison, who posted a mark of 29 feet. Teammate Hannah Whittley finished fourth with a throw of 24 feet, 4 inches.

Clinton’s 4x100-meter relay team took second place, finishing in 54.64 seconds. Ashleigh Alcott notched a pair of Top 5 finishes in the hurdles, placing third in the 300-meter hurdles (1:02.24) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (23.07).

Saviah Stewart placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (29.13) and eighth in the 100 (13.81). Distance runner Alli Hollifield took eighth in the 800 (2:56.49) and 10th in the 1,600 (6:09.45). Sadie Haney placed 10th in the long jump (13-10), and Chalandra Ellis was 10th in the discus (50-11.5).

In the boys’ meet, the Dragons dominated the sprints.

Clinton had five runners finish in the Top 10 of the 100-meter dash, led by Will’Queis Young, who won with a time of 11.38 seconds.

Donnavin Pencek was second (11.56), Bryson Maddox took fifth (11.72), and Ryker Armes was 10th (11.87).

In the 200, Pencek finished second (23.58), Young was fifth (24.25) and Ryin Jones took eighth (24.47).

Konner Baylis placed third in the 400 (53.12), while Cooper Bostrom finished 10th in the 1,600 (5:06.71).

Lucas Butz placed second in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.54) and the 300 hurdles (41.83). Maddox won the high jump with a leap of 6-4, and the 4x100 relay team took second (45.15). Pencek also finished third in the long jump (19-3.5).

“We had some strong performances,” Kumes said. “We’ve had a good week of work. We’ve gotten some people back after a week off because they had been banged up.”

On Saturday, the Dragons and Lady Dragons returned to Knoxville to compete in the South-Doyle Invitational.

Hutchison again claimed first place in the shot put (28-0) and added a sixth-place finish in the 800 (3:09.74).

Clinton had three Top 10 finishers in the girls’ 100-meter dash: Laci Clevenger placed fourth (13.96), Stewart was seventh (14.05), and Malyiah Drake finished 10th (14.28). Clevenger also finished sixth in the 200 and fourth in the 400, while Stewart took ninth in the 200.

Hollifield finished third in the 800 (2:56.01) and again in the 1,600 (6:13.38). In the 100-meter hurdles, Haney was runner-up (17.49) and Alcott took ninth (22.70). Alcott also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles. Haney was third in the long jump (14-2.5), and Alcott was seventh (12-7.5).

For the Dragons, Pencek won the 200 (23.45), with Jones close behind in second (23.49). Jones also took third in the 100, and Armes placed sixth. Maddox finished second in the 400 (53.75), with Baylis third (53.84).
