Anderson County High School softball notched one of its biggest wins under first-year Head Coach Lindsey Verner Monday night.

The Lady Mavericks defeated crosstown rival Clinton 9-6 in a slugfest at ACHS, claiming their second victory in three matchups this season against the Lady Dragons.

With the win, Anderson County (18-8 overall, 4-2 in District 4-AAA) salvaged a season split in district play. The Lady Mavericks also beat Clinton in an earlier tournament game.

Senior leadoff hitter and centerfielder Kaycee Baldwin paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with two triples, a run scored and an RBI.

“She really sets the tone,” Verner said. “Every inning that she’s up, she makes something happen.”

Reece Brock tripled, scored a run and drove in another, while Kara Waddell also tripled, scored, and notched three RBIs. Ashton Thurman singled and scored twice.

“The big thing for us is that we’re starting to realize that we’re good — we just have to apply ourselves,” Verner said. “That’s big for us, and they’ve been doing that. I’ve given them the tools, and they’ve done a great job applying them.”

Anderson County jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never trailed in the contest.

Clinton senior leadoff hitter Taylor Sherwood went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Mandy Chambers had two hits and drove in a run.

Bryana Holt went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Tegan Bunch doubled and knocked in a run, while Sara Bishop collected two hits, including a double, and scored for the Lady Dragons, who allowed just four earned runs.

“We just had a very off night, and that was uncharacteristic for us, especially after how we played over the weekend,” Clinton Coach Leonard Sams said.

“It was one of our worst defensive games,” he said. “We had too many errors.

“This was a wake-up call. We have to show up and play. We can’t just show up and expect to roll over people.”
