Lady Mavs show grit in stretch of tough matchups

Despite her team dropping two of its last three games, Anderson County High School softball Coach Lindsey Verner remains optimistic.

After notching a 9-6 District 4-AAA win over crosstown rival Clinton on Monday, April 14, the Lady Mavericks fell to first-place Gibbs the next day.

The defending state champion Lady Eagles defeated Anderson County 12-2 in five innings.

The Lady Mavericks (19-10 overall, 5-3 in District 4-AAA) opened the scoring against Gibbs.

“They had one big inning against us,” Verner said. “We scored first, and other than that big inning, we were right there with them. They’re good, but they’re beatable.”

Senior centerfielder and leadoff hitter Kaycee Baldwin went 2-for-3 and scored both runs in the contest. Alli McKamey drove in both runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

On Thursday, the Lady Mavericks rebounded with a 10-1 victory over Scott, pounding out 13 hits and applying pressure on the basepaths.

Baldwin had two hits and two stolen bases, and scored twice.

Reece Brock went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI.

McKamey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, two stolen bases and one run scored.

Kara Waddell tripled, scored, and drove in a run, while Trinity Lawson had two hits and an RBI.

AC closed out the week with a 3-2 loss to Cocke County.

Freshman pitcher Cindle Justice tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four.

Baldwin doubled and scored. Brock singled and scored, and Ashton Thurman had an RBI single.

“Cocke County is a very good team, and we played well,” Verner said. “It was all about not getting the timely hits for us.”
