Clinton baseball shows firepower despite 1-3 week

Despite dropping three of four games last week, the Clinton High School baseball team put on an offensive display.

The Dragons (11-17 overall, 4-4 in District 4-AAA) opened the week with a two-game district sweep at the hands of Gibbs.

In Monday’s matchup at the newly renamed Morgan Wallen Field in Corryton, the Eagles posted a 12-5 victory.

All five Clinton runs came in the second inning, capped by a grand slam from Aden Golden. Will Brooks collected two hits, including a double, and added an RBI.

The teams met again Tuesday at Jaycee Park, where the Eagles edged the Dragons 5-3.

Clinton outhit Gibbs 7-6, but couldn’t convert enough chances.

Jake Rittenberry had a three-hit performance with a double, while Dallas Beets added two hits and an RBI.

Alex Duggins singled, drove in a run, scored and swiped a base.

The Dragons bounced back Thursday with a 12-4 rout of Gatlinburg-Pittman at home.

Rittenberry stayed red-hot, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Golden doubled and scored four times. Duggins also doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.

JP Robbins had a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Jackson Webb singled, scored twice and drove in one. Beets singled, scored, walked twice and added two RBIs. Will Easterday was 1-for-1, walked twice, scored three times and knocked in a run.

On Friday, the two teams squared off again in Gatlinburg, and this time the Highlanders staged a dramatic comeback. Clinton led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but G-P plated three runs to win 4-3 on a walk-off single by Rylin Rad.

Webb had three hits, including a double, and scored a run. Rittenberry added two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, as the Dragons once again outhit their opponent 7-6 but fell short on the scoreboard.
