Dark shines, distance crew dominates for Mavs

In their final meets before the Class AA state sectional championships, the Anderson County High School track and field teams turned in strong performances.

The Mavericks and Lady Mavericks opened the final week of the regular season Tuesday, April 29, at Oak Ridge High School.

In the girls’ 1,600-meter run, Anderson County had three top-five finishers.

Morgan Haire won the event, clocking 6 minutes, 16.64 seconds. Marley Caldwell was second at 6:19.28, and Emma Owens placed fifth at 7:16.91. Cate Clotfelder finished sixth with a time of 7:40.38.

Mattie Lively took seventh in the discus with a throw of 65 feet, 11 inches, and placed third in the shot put with a mark of 21-11.

In the sprints, Carla Hanna finished seventh in both the 200-meter dash (31.26) and the 400 (1:12.31).

Bralee Hall took seventh in the 800 (2:41.48) and ninth in the 100 (14.01). Lily Trent placed eighth in the 800 (2:44.25), and Ella Clark came in ninth in the 200 (36.21).

For the Mavericks, standout thrower Luke Dark, a junior, won the shot put with a mark of 62-11, and finished second in the discus at 146-4. Caleb Dill was eighth in the discus (109-4).

In the boys’ 1,600, Anderson County placed five runners in the top 10. Vance Laster won with a time of 4:27.80, followed by John Cutler (second, 4:44.51), Franklin Downs (third, 5:01.43), Avian Laster (fifth, 5:17.83), and Zander Vo (ninth, 5:36.23).

Ben Clotfelder took second in the 800 (2:04.95) and fourth in the 400 (54.36). Vance Laster (third, 2:06.28), Cutler (fourth, 2:06.52), and Landon Rainey (ninth, 2:17.58) also had Top 10 finishes in the 800.

Waylon LaRue won the 100-meter dash (10.83) and was second in the long jump (20-2.5). Joseph Hall won the long jump with a leap of 22-3, and Kaden Chadwell was ninth (17-0). Lane LaRue finished third in the 100 (11.60), and Chadwell came in eighth (12.00).

The Mavericks’ 4x100-meter relay team was first at 44.94.

At the Sobota Classic on Thursday, hosted by Karns High School, Lively finished eighth in the girls’ discus (70-2), while Dill was eighth in the boys’ discus (102-11).

Anderson County will compete in the state sectional meet Saturday at the University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track in Knoxville.
